What is English?
English literature is an educational subject based on the English language, it has a wide range of genres like novels, poetry, plays, and essays from different time periods and regions. It has works by authors from England, Ireland, and other English-speaking countries helping students become more aware of the culture. English literature is analyzing how writers use language to explore themes, characters, and universal human experiences, and being able to express what we analyze from those works into a visual representation on how we connect and understand it.
What should you expect to see in this class?
English Literature at Palmer Secondary focuses on developing reading, writing, and analytical skills. Students will explore novels, short stories, and poetry, learning how to identify themes, characters, and literary devices. Students would normally be required to analyze The Pigman, which would involve reading selected chapters and creating their own creative summaries and reflections based on their opinion. Students would be provided graphic organizers to track plot, character development, and themes. Students would develope essay-writing skills, improved comprehension, and also learn to support ideas with evidence.
